Small businesses are the backbone of our communities. They’re where innovation begins, where neighbors support neighbors, and where the American Dream lives. But too often, red tape, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and unfair competition get in the way of their success. That’s why I was proud to support 10 bills on the floor of the House of Representatives this week—each one focused on empowering small business owners, cutting through federal red tape, and leveling the playing field.
When an American signs the dotted line to join the military, they do so with the understanding that Washington will keep its promises. One of those promises is the G.I. Bill – a commitment to help service members and their families pursue educational opportunities.
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07), Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, today introduced the Patriots Over Politics Act. This bill will restore the rights of service members to transfer their unused GI Bill education benefits to their children if their military careers were cut short due to the Department of Defense’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
The people of mid-Michigan sent me to Congress to do the hard work necessary to lower the cost of living, secure our border, and unleash American energy. Washington, D.C. — Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07) released the following statement after H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed the House of Representatives with his support.
“The people of mid-Michigan sent me to Congress to do the hard work necessary to lower the cost of living, secure our border, and unleash American energy. The legislation we passed today makes good on those promises and more.
Delivering for veterans shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This week, the House put politics aside and came together to pass 9 bipartisan bills that take meaningful steps towards improving the lives of our nation’s heroes. I believe Washington has a duty to serve those who served with the same dedication they showed our country.
Washington, D.C. — In recognition of Military Appreciation Month, Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07), Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, introduced three pieces of legislation to improve the delivery, efficiency, and integrity of veterans’ services. Specifically, these bills are designed to bring the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) into the 21st century by enhancing digital communication, combating fraud, and streamlining community care scheduling.
I know firsthand that when it comes to serving those who served us, the VA must do better. Veterans deserve timely care, accurate benefits, and simple, reliable communication. That’s why I’m proud to introduce three commonsense bills that tackle waste, cut red tape, and modernize outdated systems.
Washington, D.C. — Tonight, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 1364, the Automotive Support Services to Improve Safe Transportation (ASSIST) Act. This bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07) and Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander (NH-02) would help disabled veterans make the vehicle modifications they need to travel safely by giving the VA greater flexibility to offer financial assistance for a wider range of necessary adaptations.
