Congressman Tom Barrett Applauds President Trump Signing the Laken Riley Act into law
Washington, D.C. — Today, President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law, which will require the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants arrested for violating additional laws.
“This was the very first bill I voted for as a new member of Congress, and today it became the first law signed by President Trump since his inauguration,” said Barrett. “This bill passed with considerable bipartisan support, and it marks the first step we’ve taken to secure our border and remove criminals who are already in the country illegally. I ran for Congress to protect Michigan families, and that’s exactly what the Laken Riley Act does. I proudly voted ‘yes’ because keeping our communities safe is my top priority. I’m honored to serve the people of Michigan in this critical role.”
The Laken Riley Act is named in memory of Laken Riley, a young woman whose life was tragically cut short. Her story serves as a painful reminder of the need to enforce immigration laws and protect innocent lives from preventable crimes. It passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support including both U.S Senators from Michigan.
