Barrett Votes To Require Voter ID for Federal Elections

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07) today voted for the SAVE America Act (S. 1383), which would require individuals to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote and provide photo ID when casting a ballot. The bill passed the House of Representatives today with bipartisan support by a vote of 218 - 213.

According to Gallup, 84% of Americans across the political spectrum support voter ID requirements. Additionally, 83% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

“It shouldn’t be controversial to demand that only United States citizens be allowed to vote in our federal elections,” said Barrett. “We require a photo ID to drive a car, board an airplane, and open a bank account. Voting in an election – one of the most sacred and fundamental rights we have in this country – shouldn’t be any different. The SAVE America Act is commonsense policy that the vast majority of Americans support to strengthen our election integrity and restore confidence in our process.”

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act (H.R. 7296) would require new voters to verify their citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The bill would also require voters in federal elections to show photo ID when voting. Additionally, the legislation would require states to regularly cross-check their voter rolls to remove any non-citizens who illegally registered.

This comes after Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini recently identified 14 non-citizens who were registered to vote, some of whom had a voting history. This is in addition to earlier reporting that at least 15 non-citizens cast ballots in the 2024 election. Last week, Barrett and the Michigan Republican congressional delegation sent a letter to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson demanding answers about these ongoing election integrity concerns in Michigan.
