Restoring Peace in Ukraine and Keeping Americans Safe
Russia’s unjust aggression against Ukraine has gone unchecked for too long.
It’s time to negotiate a deal that will finally put a stop to the death and destruction, deliver a durable peace to the region, and prevent a wider conflict in Europe to ensure we keep American troops out of combat.
President Trump has made it clear that it’s time for this war to end, announcing plans to sell Patriot missiles and other weapons to Ukraine to intercept attacks and defend against Russian aggression. He is also giving Vladimir Putin 50 days to agree to a peace deal before the United States implements 100% secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s remaining trade partners.
I’m encouraged by President Trump’s commitment to peace and believe he should have every tool at his disposal to achieve it. In Congress, I am prepared to support the president and this effort with two pieces of legislation that hold Russia accountable.
The first bill is called the Preventing the Escalation of Armed Conflict in Europe (PEACE) Act, which would give the president the tools he needs to apply maximum pressure to stop the fighting. Specifically, it would authorize new sanctions against foreign institutions that are propping up Russia’s energy sector and bankrolling the violence against Ukraine. Additionally, the bill would sunset the expanded sanction authority five years after enactment or 30 days after Russia ceases destabilizing Ukraine.
I’m also helping lead the charge on the Sanctioning Russia Act, which is legislation that would impose sweeping sanctions against Russia and any nation or actor complicit in sustaining its war of aggression against Ukraine. Specifically, this bill would place a 500 percent tariff on all imports to the United States from Russia, as well as from any countries that continue to fund Putin’s war machine by purchasing Russian oil, uranium, or petroleum products.
I look forward to working with President Trump and my colleagues in Congress to continue down a path towards a peaceful resolution and keep American troops out of harm's way.
