Helping Service Members Achieve the American Dream
I know firsthand that during long deployments and difficult moments of service, what keeps our service members going is the hope of returning home to their family. But that promise is harder to fulfill when unnecessary barriers stand in the way of putting a roof over your head.
Today, outdated requirements are making it unnecessarily difficult for members of the National Guard and Armed Forces Reserve to access the VA home loan — a benefit that can be life-changing. This program offers competitive interest rates and no down payment, providing a real opportunity for service members, veterans, and their families to achieve homeownership and long-term stability in our communities.
That’s why I introduced the Home Affordability for Guard and Reserve Act, legislation that expands eligibility by allowing Guard and Reserve members who have served at least 14 total days of active duty, inactive duty training, or annual training to apply for a VA home loan. This simple update ensures that more service members can access benefits and put down roots in their communities.
The truth is that I couldn’t have purchased the home I raise my family in to this day without the VA Home Loan, and I’m proud to help open that same door for even more Guard and Reserve members.
Reviving the American Dream and helping more Americans afford a home is part of my Blueprint for a Better America, a bold agenda to put working families first.
