Barrett Delivers Permanent Tax Relief for Michigan Families, Sends One Big Beautiful Bill to President's Desk
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Tom Barrett (MI-07) issued the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, sending it to President Donald Trump's desk to be signed into law.
"Today, I joined my colleagues in passing the One Big Beautiful Bill to prevent the largest tax hike in American history, lower energy costs, and permanently secure our border – all while protecting the integrity of Medicaid and SNAP for those who need them most. This legislation will create thousands of good-paying jobs to boost our economy, ensure the middle class keeps more money in their pockets, and invest in a brighter future for America.
"It also delivers on promises made to hardworking families and businesses in Michigan: no tax on tips or overtime, permanent tax relief, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and more. I'm proud to send this pro-growth policy to President Trump's desk and look forward to the real difference it will make in the lives of people across the country."
Below is a list of the significant wins the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will deliver for individuals and families across the United States:
Delivering Permanent Tax Relief
- Prevents a 22% tax hike on the average taxpayer by making the 2017 tax cuts permanent, saving middle-class Americans who earn between $30,000 and $80,000 as much as 15%.
- Delivers on the promise of no tax on tips and overtime.
- Reduces the cost of American-made vehicles by making interest payments tax-deductible.
- Provides additional tax relief to seniors collecting on their Social Security benefits, allowing many to deduct an additional $6,000.
Supporting Families in Michigan
- Permanently expands the Child Tax Credit to $2200 per child.
- Enhances the Adoption Tax Credit to make starting a family more affordable.
- Strengthens the Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax Credit.
- Builds on incentives for paid leave and child care.
- Creates a new savings account for newborn U.S. citizens to incentivize education, entrepreneurship, and homeownership while encouraging financial security.
Supporting Small Businesses and American Manufacturing
- Cuts taxes for small business owners, family farms, and independent contractors.
- Brings jobs and investment back to America by rewarding companies that build new factories in the United States and lowering the tax rate for businesses that make their products in America.
- Encourages businesses to innovate and expand by allowing companies to deduct Research and Development (R&D) expenses immediately rather than over a five-year period.
Securing America's Southern Border
- Provides the largest border security investment in American history, including funding to:
- Build 701 miles of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border;
- Equip border patrol agents with next-generation surveillance technology; and
- Hire 10,000 new ICE agents, 5,000 new customs officers, and 3,000 new Border Patrol agents.
Strengthening Medicaid for the Most Vulnerable
- Preserves Medicaid for the people the program is designed to serve: expectant mothers, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly.
- Requires healthy, able-bodied adults on Medicaid to return to the workforce or do meaningful volunteer work in their community. The bill also removes illegal immigrants, duplicative or deceased enrollees, and other ineligible persons from the Medicaid rolls.
Restoring America's Energy Dominance
- Lowers the costs of gas and electricity for families and businesses by unleashing American energy dominance and increasing domestic mining.
- Rescinds costly and unnecessary Inflation Reduction Act funds from Department of Energy programs that fail to meet our energy needs.
- Unleashes American infrastructure by expediting environmental reviews.
- Repairs and strengthens the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Investing in the United States of America
- Invests in a more powerful and lethal U.S. military.
- Dedicates $24.6 billion for the Coast Guard to support mission readiness and protect our water borders.
- Revamps our Navy and the shipbuilding industry.
- Provides $12.5 billion for the Federal Aviation Administration to modernize Air Traffic Control technology.
Providing Certainty for Michigan Farmers
- Addresses key provisions from the Farm Bill, including modernizing the farm safety net to better protect against economic uncertainty and market volatility.
- Enhances risk management tools for livestock and specialty crops.
